When wastewater enters the reactor from the bottom, the upward flow of water combined with the large amount of gas produced creates a natural mixing effect. This also results in a relatively thin sludge suspension layer forming above the sludge bed in the reaction zone. As the suspension enters the separation zone, the gas is first collected in the gas collection chamber and separated. The wastewater containing the suspended solids then moves into the settling chamber of the separation zone. Since the gas has been separated, there is minimal disturbance in the settling chamber, allowing the sludge to settle. The settled sludge is then returned to the reaction zone via inclined surfaces.
